Arrived in Fuji yesterday after another fairly big and expensive day of travel; Lake Kawaguchiko is the name of the town we are staying in. We had to take the bullet train again (for two hours) because it was the only way that wouldn’t take all day by local trains, then we had another two hour bus ride to get to the other side Fuji mountain. Carolyn got sick, no big surprises. The surrounding area isn’t all that dissimilar from Kelowna actually, although the lake is quite a bit smaller it is also surrounded by mountains around the same size. It almost feels like a ski town because the mountain is so dominating of the surrounding environment.
This morning was a wonderfully clear day so we decided we would rush up the cable car while it was nice, given our previous luck in Beppu. I turned out we got quite a spectacular view of Fuji for our first day, I don’t think the pictures do it justice because it was a little hazy due to the heat but I’m sure we will have plenty more. We plan on taking the cable car up in the evening sometime to catch it in some better light. Supposedly there are several lava tube caves around the adjacent lake that we will check out in a day or two, from the pictures they look pretty cool so I’m sure we will have some good stories or pictures of our own. Maybe it’s a guy thing but I like caves, what can I say?
I should write about the hostel we are staying in as well because it is probably the most amazing place I’ve ever stayed in the world (for a hostel). It’s called K’s house and it just opened in march, it’s a little pricey but if you have the chance I highly recommend it. They common rooms are filled with new furniture and there’s a big screen t.v. with English movies! and everything is actually clean! Amazing. For those who don’t know we will be headed to China and up to Tibet on the 28th of November if anyone has and tips and suggestions of things to do or see while there.
Mike
